βΌοΈ"Niko Amalinu" - Our Symbolic ShipβΌοΈ β οΈTanna's rich custom is a vibrant blend of tradition and modernity, deeply rooted in the island's history. From the nomadic "Kapakol" and "Kaprarou" eras to the present day, the people of Tanna have maintained a strong connection to their land and each other. β οΈThe kastom "roads" (connecting even KAFE - Keamu, Aniwa, Futuna & Erromango) that bind them are built on love, respect, and peace, fostering a sense of unity and friendship that transcends geographical boundaries. β οΈThe island's symbolic "ships" represent different eras, from the early age of cannibalism and tribalism, to one of structured organization, peace and harmony. This journey through the "ships" has shaped the Tanna people's resilience and strong sense of community. β οΈWhile they may be highly reactive to perceived danger, it's a testament to their deep-seated desire to protect their way of life and the people they care about. β οΈThe current ship "Amalinu" - translated as "Peace" or "Calmness" has been loaded since June with food crops and veggies; in fact anything food-related. Food is intrinsically connected to culture since time immemorial. It's the opposite of what could have been in the olden days - where there was constant tribal warfare. The traders did not help the situation when they introduced muskets and guns. β οΈWith more structured organization dawned a new day for progress and social harmony. β οΈAny ship has a "Captain", "Engineers" and "Crew" - and of course "Passengers and "Cargo". β οΈIn the mind of Tafeans, MV Vanuatu is our ship with a captain, engineers, crew and passengers. Vanuatu, the ship, has a destiny - its chart and compass are already enshrined in the preamble of our Constitution. The onus is on everyone - who must play their part to ensure the ship sails safely into harbour. β οΈLeadership in this part of our Vanuatu is an art in and of itself. How the captain navigates the waters is paramount to ensure safety of the ship until port of destination. β οΈAs such, in Tanna tradition and modernity coexist in harmony, with the island's kastom serving as a powerful reminder of the importance of love, respect, and unity in the face of change. β οΈAfter PSC day(s), next week will not be all about feasting and fanfare. It should serve as an opportunity for us to forge our own identity and progress. Inculcating our traditional values and identity into our planning processes should be the aim of the whole exercise, with Tafea being designated as the country's 'Cultural Hub'. Vanuatu π»πΊ Tugeta Yumi StanapβΌοΈβΌοΈ π«Άπππ€ππ βΌοΈThe message for all our participants from the other provinces is: take what is positive and helpful back to your own locations and actively promote your own cultural values and kastoms to build a resilient and cohesive community, island, province and nation βΌοΈπ₯°
